It all began with an idea to share sustainable stories, a dash of inspiration, and a dose of crucial encouragement.

April 22nd of this year marks the 51st annual Earth Day! Originally celebrated in the United States in 1970, the goal was to mark a day dedicated to environmental action, which grew yearly and was eventually celebrated by many countries around the world including Canada!

Since then, Tous les Jours / Earth Day Canada, became an organization dedicated to helping individuals and organizations to reduce their environmental impact. Canada Solves is proud to spread Earth Day awareness as well! This year, their campaign is encouraging people to take action through their "I take care of the planet" campaign…

Canada Solves is also proud to launch our website and podcast, PlastiCanada, this Earth Day April 22nd! The PlastiCanada podcast was created in 2020 through the support and guidance of Ocean Bridge, a youth program dedicated to encouraging individuals to act and make positive environmental change within their local networks and neighborhoods. Through that program, Cordelia, the founder, began to plan webinars that might highlight focus on individual or organizational changes that support sustainability goals in Canada. The project grew from there as she was exposed to more and more amazing developments taking place right now in Canada; she found it difficult to focus on one or two amazing projects that are underway! Finally, it was decided that we would take at least one example from each Province and Territory in Canada that might inspire others to engage in waste management and discard awareness in Canada.

Thus, the PlastiCanada podcast was created as an auditory platform to deliver these stories! Chantiers jeunesse and WWF Canada partnered to support youth biodiversity programming in Canada, and Cordelia was able to utilize their support as well to create the platform Canada Solves. Canada Solves, aims to not only be a platform to host our podcast, but also to promote sustainability resources and educational awareness.

Still a work-in-progress, but we are so pleased to present Canada Solves and PlastiCanada this Earth Day 2021! We have truly been humbled by the number and quality of initiatives individuals and organizations across Canada; we know it is a ‘drop in the bucket’ to begin with only one story from each province and territory... however, small steps add up to great leaps!

Our first episode, airing April 22nd and produced with the guidance of Cumhachd Music, features a discussion with Mr. Denis Lanoë of Copol International Ltd, a plastics (cast polypropylene) manufacturer from Cordelia’s home province of Nova Scotia. Mr. Lanoë discusses the idea of a Circular Economy, the initiatives Copol International Ltd have undertaken to address waste within manufacturing, as well as current and future research they are focused on. Tune in to this first podcast and interview, and let us know what you think!

Next month we will present an interview with Kaitlyn Hawkins, Manager of the Civic Laboratory for Environmental Action Research (CLEAR) at Memorial University of Newfoundland. We look forward to discussing their work and initiatives faced in that province as well.

Thank you to all who supported this journey, and to those still participating with valuable feedback, suggestions, and interviews! Our mission to spread awareness about how to create a more sustainable Canada would not have been possible without this support.

Thank you especially to Earth Day Canada for their valuable work and resources that support our launch!
